In a kingdom by the sea…
In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.

A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries—the most powerful of supernatural creatures—teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.

Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?

The darkly magical world of Shadowhunters has captured the imaginations of millions of readers across the globe. Join the adventure in Lady Midnight, the long-awaited first volume of a new trilogy from Cassandra Clare.

This is actually an older review of mine, among the first ones I have ever written, but I wanted to put it out there in anticipation of the release of Queen of Air and Darkness (which is less than two and a half months away!)

After reading TMI and TID I’ve had mixed expectations of this book- it could’ve turned out both very good or very meh. And even though Clare still describes the same thing way too many times (after reading half of the book, I’m pretty sure I remember Emma is blonde and Blackthorns have sea-blue eyes) it was WAY better than TMI, so who am I to complain?

But, what made me actually like it?
1) The mistery. I kinda spoiled the ending to myself but I really enjoyed the whole process of investigation and looking for clues. Everything seemed believeable plus I honestly don’t think I could’ve guessed who the Guardian was exactly if I hadn’t known it beforehand.

2) BLACKTHORN FAMILY. They all are so amazing and their interactions and silly banters with one another were one of my favourite parts of the book. It’s kinda like Will and Cecily, but times three *u*

3) Ships. Jemma of course, but well, I expected that. What came to me as kind of surprise was Marktina. I’ve obviously heard about them as a ship before (and didn’t expect much of it), but hear me out, these two are perfect for each other!! I think I’ll be seriously upset if Marktina isn’t the end game at the end of QoAaD

4) Annabel Lee (the poem). I love Poe’s works and I love how the poem was incorporated into the storyline. I didn’t read many books where a poem plays such a major part so I found that really refreshing

All in all, it could’ve been better, especially in terms of the writing style which could’ve been a little bit ‘flowier’, but I liked it a lot and, for what it’s worth, I’d definitely recommend it!

  1. I had no idea Poe's work was mentioned in this book XD I'll never forget the first time I read his story The Black Cat...it's disturbing but also fascinating I guess. I feel like all of his work is like that e.g. The Raven one XD

Anyways, I've given up on Clare's work a long time ago and I don't plan on reading anything that has to do with the Shadowhunter world so I don't really know what so say about this book *awkward*

    1. Agreed! It's really disturbing but I kind-of-sort-of like it anyway and I was so happy when I realized this book was that connected with his poem XD

Also, I get you- there's a LOT of it and it's kind of exhausting (but I won't complain since it somehow managed to get me out of a super long reading slump XD)
